چکیده

We use a rapidly rotating tank lled with water to study the random walks of tracer particles in two di erent ows: one with coherent structures (vortices and jets), and one without (weakly turbulent). Most random walks, such as those taken by dye molecules di using by Brownian motion, obey the Central Limit Theorem; their motion can be characterized by a di usion constant. The random walks in our experiment with coherent structures are L evy ights: random walks with in nite mean square step size. L evy ights are particularly interesting as the Central Limit Theorem does not apply to them; the e ective di usion constant becomes in nite. Tracer particles in the weakly turbulent ow di use normally. We discuss our observations and mathematical descriptions of transport in situations with L evy ights.

evy ight random searches in biological phenomena

There has been growing interest in the study of L evy ights observed in the movements of biological organisms performing random walks while searching for other organisms. Here, we approach the problem of what is the best statistical strategy for optimizing the encounter rate between “searcher” and “target” organisms—either of the same or of di9erent species—in terms of a limiting generalized se...

Statistical Physics of Random Searches

We apply the theory of random walks to quantitatively describe the general problem of how to search eÆciently for randomly located objects that can only be detected in the limited vicinity of a searcher who typically has a nite degree of \free will" to move and search at will. We illustrate L evy ight search processes by comparison to Brownian random walks and discuss experimental observations ...

The ecology of gaze shifts

We present a phenomenological model for the generation of human visual scanpaths. Successions of saccadic eye-movements are treated as realizations of a stochastic jump process in a random quenched salience eld. EEciency of the process is deened in terms of convergence properties of the time dependent probability of xating a region in the visual environment. Based on the assumption that the vis...

Asymptotic Distributions of the Continuous - TimeRandom

We provide a systematic analysis of the possible asymptotic distributions of one-dimensional continuous-time random walks (CTRWs) by applying the limit theorems of probability theory. Biased and unbiased walks of coupled and decoupled memory are considered. In contrast to previous works concerning decoupled memory and L evy walks, we deal also with arbitrary coupled memory and with jump densiti...

Fractional Diierentiability of Nowhere Diierentiable Functions and Dimensions

Weierstrass's everywhere continuous but nowhere diierentiable function is shown to be locally continuously fractionally diierentiable everywhere for all orders below thècritical order' 2?s and not so for orders between 2?s and 1, where s, 1 < s < 2, is the box dimension of the graph of the function. This observation is consolidated in the general result showing a direct connection between local...
